Whale Snowflake - Jonah

Jonah Chapters 1-3

God called a man name Jonah. God told Jonah to go to Nineveh and preach. Jonah didn’t want to go to Nineveh to preach. Nineveh was a scary place. There was much evil in Nineveh.

Instead of going to Nineveh, Jonah got on ship headed in the other direction.

God knew exactly where Jonah was. The Lord sent a great wind into sea. The wind and the waves beat against the ship. All the men on the ship were afraid. They started tossing everything overboard trying to save the ship. They were all crying out to their gods.

Where do you think Jonah was? He was down in the ship fast asleep. The men woke Jonah up and told Jonah to pray too.

The men cast lots to learn who caused the storm to come against the ship. The lot fell upon Jonah. Jonah told them that he served the only true God, but he was running away from him.

Jonah told the men to throw him overboard and the storm would stop. They didn’t want to do that. They tried to bring the ship to land, but the storm was too strong. The men threw Jonah overboard as he had told them to do. As soon as they did, the storm stopped.

Jonah didn’t drown in the sea. The Lord sent a great fish to swallow Jonah. Jonah was in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights.

Jonah prayed to God from the belly of that great fish. God spoke to the fish, and it spewed Jonah out on the dry land.

The Lord spoke to Jonah a second time telling him to go to Nineveh and preach. What do you think Jonah did this time? Jonah went to Nineveh as the Lord told him. When people of the Nineveh heard the words of the Lord that Jonah spoke to them, they turned from their wicked ways and prayed to God.

Jonah should have obeyed God at the first, shouldn’t he? It would have been better than being swallowed by a great fish!

We should always obey God. God speaks to us through His word, the bible. It tells us how we should live our lives. It instructs us how to love God and love others. Always obey God’s word.
