Teacher Tips - Small Class Challenges

These Tips are relevant for all teachers, but especially those who teach small classes with multiple age groups and children from transient families.

1. The most important thing to remember in preparing a children's lesson is to pray and seek the Lord's guidance. These resources are designed as a springboard to assist you in presenting the gospel to children in a simple way they may understand.

2. Every lesson should point children to Jesus. A child may only come to one class, and he should leave knowing Jesus is the Way to heaven. Whether your lesson is taken from the Old or New Testament conclude it by comparing it to our lives today and the need for Jesus.

3. Keep lessons creative, fresh and exciting. The children must sit up straight and take tests in school. Maintain a relaxed environment. They have videos at home to watch. They need a human being to interact with them, not a cartoon. Have interactive lessons that make learning fun. Children will want to come back only if the class is enjoyable.

4. When working with a group of children of different ages, aim your teaching level at the older children. The younger children will retain some of it, and you will keep their attention, if the activities are fun and the older children show interest. If your lessons are focused on younger children, the older ones will lose interest, get bored and not want to come back.

5. Working with children of diverse ages and not knowing from week to week the number that will be in attendance has challenges. Preparation is the key. Have a "Plan B". If you are planning a skit that requires six participants, prepare an alternative activity in case only 4 children attend, or if all the children are too young to participate. The best lesson plan for this environment is a collection of short activities that can be rearranged, lengthened or omitted if necessary. You may not be able to choose participants in advance since you cannot be certain they will be at the following class.

6. Every class should be complete and self-contained. Since you are not sure who will attend each week don’t have a "part 1" and "part 2" of the lesson. It is fine to have a theme that lasts several weeks such as the ten commandments, the fruit of the Spirit, the miracles of Jesus or the life of Moses. If you do, make sure each lesson is complete. If this is the only class the child attends, he should leave knowing about Jesus.
