Matthew 5:14

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Have you ever sung the song This Little Light of Mine? Maybe while you were singing it, you held your finger up like a light or a candle. You sang “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.” Do you know what it means to let your light shine?

We can read in the bible that when Jesus was preaching to a crowd of people, He taught that those people who really follow God are blessed. He told them you are the light of the world. If we follow God, we are the light of the world too.

This was a long time ago when Jesus was teaching this. They didn’t have electricity. They used candles for light. Jesus said nobody would light a candle and put it under a bushel basket. They would put it on a candlestick where it would give light for people to see in the house.

If we were in a dark room and I lit a candle and put it under a bushel basket, that wouldn’t help us at all, would it. No, we would still stumble around in the darkness. If I put a candle in the room on a candlestick then we would be able to see, wouldn’t we?

Jesus taught that we’re supposed to be like that candle. What are we supposed to help people see? We’re supposed to help people see how good God is.

Jesus taught we should let our light shine so people might see our good works and glorify God.

What can we do to let our light shine? We can follow what the bible teaches. That means we don’t lie, or cheat, or steal. We should obey our parents. We should be kind and generous. We should pray and read our bible. We should tell our friends about Jesus and invite them to church.

Jesus wants us to be the light of the world, so more people will see Him.
